The new academic year has been met with smiles and tears according to this morning’s edition of The Citizen. In a roundup of the nationwide return to school they report on the various reactions to the donning of school uniforms after weeks of summer holiday. One mother reports that her six year old is very excited, “She couldn’t wait to start writing,” while other first graders were clinging to their parents, refusing to be left with their teachers. Pupils weren’t the only ones with back-to-school jitters this morning as parents all over the country held their little ones’ hands as they entered the schoolyards. “I have to make sure he is in class before I go to work. I am sure it’s a difficult period for most parents as we struggle to balance time,” said one such supportive father as he walked his little boy to school.
Among those heading to school this morning was Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga. “[We] decided to come to this school to thank [the] principal and teachers for the job they are putting in and to encourage learners,” said the deputy president when asked why they were visiting Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School in Midrand. Officials were deployed all around the country to ensure a happy, harmonious first day.
Millions of South African children kicked off the 2014 academic year on Wednesday morning, as inland and coastal schools reopened.
At Mdela Hlongwane Primary School in Pimville Zone Five, Soweto, pupils walked up and down in front of the school.
Zodwa Mfusi walked her daughter Mbali, six, to school.
Mbali was very excited about her new school uniform and school bag.
Her mother said: “She’s very happy and excited. She couldn’t wait to start writing.”
Mbali was fortunate to have two older siblings who would help her with her homework.
